Our two year olds Jung and Hanta Yo are set to make their racecourse debuts in quick succession this week. The young colts both hold entries in the Median Auction Maidens at Lingfield on Friday and Wolverhampton on Saturday over five and six furlongs respectively. It is most likely that Hanta Yo (pictured on the left with the white face) will head to Lingfield over the shorter trip. The son of Alhaarth, out of an Indian Ridge mare, has taken a while to mature but has come on significantly following a couple of racecourse gallops at Kempton and we expect that improvement to continue when he has his first run under his belt. He is named after one of my favourite books that is sadly out of print. Hanta Yo means 'clear the way' in Lakotah and the book tells the story of the Lakotah Indians. The book took the author Ruth Beebe Hill 20 years to write and if you ever come across a copy I highly recommend it.
Last week we had several runners. Yvonne Evelyn ran well in her debut at Lingfield and will come on a lot for the experience. She has options over seven furlongs and a mile for her follow up run. Street Power (pictured) took part in the hotly contested maiden (there was a staggering $15M+ worth of horses in the field) at Great Leighs on Thursday night and in doing so qualified for his handicap mark. His performance was picked by the Racing Post "Street Power caught the eye staying on up the home straight. He is a big sort and may still need time." He'll be back out soon, possibly stepping back to 7 furlongs due to the fact he over raced slightly early.
Owner and Breeder John Hawkins has been a long-standing supporter of the yard and this week we have two horses that he bred heading to the course. Today his three year old filly Yvonne Evelyn makes her racecourse debut at Lingfield in the maiden over seven furlongs at 2.50. 'Yvie' (pictured) is named after John's mother and has taken a while to grow into herself and mature. She is nicely bred, being by Cozzene out of One Great Lady, who is the half-sister to Lady's Secret, a horse described by The Racing Post as being 'an outstanding race mare'. The filly has had racecourse gallops at Kempton and gone nicely, however Jeremy has noticed that she takes a little while to figure things out and will probably need the experience today in what is not an easy looking maiden.
Yanza put in another good performance yesterday at Bath, coming 3rd in the five furlong maiden. She started off as favourite and ran a good race, despite not really being suited by the soft ground. Jeremy had picked out the winner before the race as being a horse to look out for and we were beaten for 2nd by just a head. The Racing Post commented after the race: “Yanza, runner-up over course and distance 17 days previously, travelled nicely on the early pace and held every chance. She most likely paid for going so hard through the first few furlongs and is no doubt up to winning a race or two, but probably needs slightly better ground”. The filly will now qualify for her handicap mark but will likely stay in maidens either on the all-weather or on the turf (if it ever does stop raining). Vamos (pictured) was our other runner last week and he came 6th in a very good maiden at Great Leighs. The Racing Post commented he showed ability and he actually achieved a better figure than Yanza did on her debut. He'll be back out soon and will improve again for the run.
Vamos literally means 'Let's go!' in Spanish and that's what we will be shouting as Vamos, our two year old colt, makes his debut at Great Leighs on Thursday. For those of you that follow our sporting bets you will know we were big on Nadal to win Wimbledon and after securing match point they cut to his uncle pumping the air and shouting "Vamos!". The name was secured the very next morning. We are hoping the son of Royal Applause is aptly named as he lines up over five furlongs in the EBF Maiden Stakes. The colt has had a racecourse gallop at Kempton and has been going nicely enough at home. We're hoping he'll enjoy the run on Thursday in what looks to be a very competitive maiden and build from there.
