Two smart new arrivals

08th April 2008

Many of you will have seen the full page article on Jeremy in Monday's Racing Post. It was all very positive (even the picture wasn't bad!) and it ended by saying "It will be no surprise if the injection of Aussie self-belief turns out to be the very thing that his employers were looking for." Let me add that's already a certainty.

Two very smart young colts arrived at the yard from the excellent Mark Dwyer's this week. Both two year old bays, one (pictured below) is by Royal Applause out of Joking Apart, the other by Polish Summer out of Sally's Cry. They have gone straight into full work here and are already proving to have plenty of character. The aim is to bring them on over the coming months and race them towards the end of the summer. The Polish summer colt is already registered as Couer Brule, which means burning heart in French.

We had a mixed bag of runners last week. It was disappointing to see Desert Quest hit the 8th fence at Aintree as he was travelling superbly at that point. Gold Cup winning jockey Sam Thomas said afterwards he was very confident until the mistake and he sensibly brought the horse home gently, ready for another day. That day is now looking likely to be at Sandown on April 26th in the last big jumps meeting of the season. Northern Seren produced her best run over hurdles to date on Saturday when finishing mid-division behind the smart Ignotus in a Novice Hurdle at Chepstow under Luke Kilgarriff. The mare (pictured below in the race) has been very slow to mature and get her head around the game but Saturday was the first time she settled into the race straight away and her jumping continues to be very good. She now has her handicap mark and we hope to see further improvement from her.

As the jumps season continues to wind down there seem to be plenty of trainers desperate to give their National Hunt horses a run, which means race planning is a little more stressful with horses getting balloted out of big fields. We have Northern Endeavour looking fit and well and ready for his first run in nearly a year this week, however with 48 horses in his preferred race at Fontwell on Thursday it is touch and go as to whether he gets a run. An alternative race for him would be at Plumpton on the 21st so look out for him there is he doesn't run this week. The Empty Tin (pictured below schooling this morning) is also waiting to see if he gets a run but he is pretty certain to make the final cut in the 2 mile 6 Novice Chase at Towcester on Thursday. With horses rated 128 and 129 in the race it will be fairly competitive but we feel the combined course and trip should suit the horse and his jumping is normally spot on.

Cheonmado is all set to run tomorrow at Bath which is conveniently just down the road. He goes over 1 mile 2 which is what he looked like needing when he finished like a train to just miss out on 2nd place at Southwell last month. The race is at 15.40 and we would expect a decent run from him under Martin Dwyer on ground that has a bit of a cut in it. Stamford Street (pictured below) may make his debut for the yard at Wolverhampton on Saturday. He is entered in the 6 furlong handicap and it will be interesting to see how he runs after a very long layoff. Also running at Wolverhampton is Shatter Resistantwho is entered in the 5 furlong seller there on Monday.

Jeremy and Kerrie's children had a real treat this morning when Harry Findlay took them for a trip in the helicopter he had hired to take him to Anfield tonight. Four year old Larnie had watched her dad fly off to Aintree in a helicopter last week. Later on she was in the car and asked her mum “why don't we travel by helicopter when we go out?” Eldest daughter Darcy, six, explained to her sister that helicopters 'cost a lot of money', however when Harry heard the story he decided to rectify matters and take them for a quick trip.

The children were even allowed to sit in the front at the controls ... once it had safely landed and been switched off.
