After over two years off of the track it was always going to be a tall order for Stamford Street to turn in a good performance last week at Kempton. However he defied the odds (he started as the 33-1 outsider) and ran a decent 2nd, going down by just half a length to Perlachy. We were delighted with the run, especially as his previous form had been poor, and it was good to hear Jeremy's name mentioned as a trainer to keep an eye open for. The horse has come back in great form and will be out again soon.
Desert Quest is all set to revert to hurdling for a run at Sandown this Saturday. As ever with the horse the ground needs to remain no worse than good for him to run but it looks like it may oblige. Quest is in good form at home. He enjoys having a varied work program and spends time relaxing in the field during the day (he is pictured in his paddock this afternoon) which helps to keep him fresh and interested in his job. The meeting is the last big National Hunt event of the year and it is good to have a runner there. Another horse running this week is Derry City who lines up in a Novice Hurdle at Fontwell on Thursday. The horse has a lot of maturing to do, both physically and mentally, but we hope he'll come on for the race and enjoy himself. Chief Exec may run over 7 Furlongs either at Wolverhampton on Friday or Brighton on Sunday and Northern Destiny is entered in a bumper on Friday but we may wait another week or two with her.
We had another influx of new horses this week so I'll introduce two today and some more next Tuesday. First up is Gaborone, a two year old chestnut filly who arrived yesterday from Mick Channon's. She has run just once, over five furlongs at Thirsk, where she missed the break but still ran very well to come 2nd. The Racing Post described her as the one to take out of the race and we look forward to running her soon. Arriving from the Tattersalls Craven Breeze up Sales last week was a two year old Kheleyf colt. He is out of Society Fair who has already produced two winners in Almutawakel and Desert Style. The colt has been on our walkers (see photo below) while he settles in and will be ridden in the next few days.
There were several horses schooling this morning and it is great to make use of our portable hurdles and fences. The jumps look great and being able to move them around makes Jeremy's life a lot easier as he can use them in different places to suit different horses. For inexperienced horses we can put them in the school and build up to jumping them after some pole work. Today, with the more experienced horses, we put a row of hurdles along our straight gallop so the horses were able to jump at a nice pace on perfect ground. The photo below shows Northern Seren and Desert Quest schooling this morning.
