Quest and Chief turn in good runs

29th April 2008

The terrific form of the horses in the yard continues with the last six runs: 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 7th, 2nd and 3rd. Desert Quest put in another top class performance for the yard last Saturday when coming third in the highly competitive Bet 365.com Hurdle at Sandown. Behind him were top-quality animals like Pigeon Island, Penzance and Hide the Evidence and we were delighted with the way our fellow ran. He returned a Racing Post Rating of 140, 10 pounds higher than he was awarded for his win at Ludlow recently, and Liam Heard who has ridden Quest many times over the years said the horse had never felt better. He'll likely run in the £75,000 Swinton at Haydock on the 10th May. The horse has come home in terrific form and went happily around the flat gallop this morning (see photo).

Another runner to note last week was Chief Exec who finished 2nd at Wolverhampton on Friday. The horse got backed in from 8-1 to 3-1 joint favourite (not by us incidentally!) and ran a very good race, losing out only to the bang in form Arthur's Edge who is described by the Racing Post as “clearly a force to be reckoned with”. The Chief (pictured below) has been a great servant to us since he joined the yard at the end of last year. He has racked up a win, a second and two fourths and we feel there are plenty more good results to come.

Some more new horses arrived this week fresh from the breeze up sales. One of the most forward is the colt pictured below who is by Stroll, out of Witching Well. He caught Jeremy's eye with a nice breeze, decent conformation and mature attitude. The colt has gone straight into full work at home and is looking like he won't be taking long to get to the track. Accompanying him from the sale was a filly by Forestry out of the mare Belong to Lassie. She is not as forward as the colt and we are giving her a short break before bringing her back into work. If anyone is interested in becoming involved with any of our two year olds, there are plenty of syndicate opportunities available. We also have syndicates running for some of our older horses, both flat and National Hunt. For more information please email Kelly Baker at kelly@horsesfirstracing.com or call 01985 841166.

There are a few horses to keep an eye out for this week. It is always nice to have the opportunity to go racing at a local track and therefore we are looking forward to making the 30 minute journey to Salisbury on Sunday with either Chief Exec or Danetime Lord. They are both entered in the 7 Furlong Lady riders' race at 17.15 and at the moment it is looking like Danetime Lord (pictured below using the Seawalker) that will run. On the Monday we have a couple of possible entries when the useful Hopeful Purchase could make his debut for the yard over a mile at Kempton. On the same day Stamford Street, fresh from his excellent 2nd last week (the TV commentators made a point of saying "he was an excellent advertisement for the yard with such an impressive return after over 700 days off the track"), may head to Warwick over 6 furlongs. As usual at this time of the year, it is a bit hit and miss whether our National Hunt entries will get a run in their vastly over-subscribed races. We'd like to take Northern Endeavour to Fontwell on Friday and Northern Destiny to Uttoxeter on Saturday to make her debut in a Bumper, however with 72 and 85 entries respectively in their races getting a run is going to be tricky.
