The turf season arrives

31st March 2009

As the sun continues to shine here in Sutton Veny, we have plenty to look forward to in the coming weeks and months as, with the turf season having got underway at the weekend, we are looking forward to making just as big an impact on the grass as we did on the all-weather during the winter months.

We have a number of runners this week who look to hold strong chances. The first of our representatives will be Horseshoe Reef, who will line up in the 11f handicap at Southwell today (Tuesday). Only five runners have been declared and we feel this Australian import (pictured on the right of Findlay & Bloom's new 2yo Leroidesanimaux colt that arrived this week) will be well suited by the slower surface, as well as the application of first-time cheekpieces. All going well, he will belatedly build on the promise of his European debut when he finished a close second at Lingfield back in January.

On Thursday, we are likely to run Yanza (pictured below using the Seawalker) in the 5f maiden at Kempton and will expect a big run from her. She was unlucky not to win as a two-year-old, finishing in the frame twice in maidens despite not being suited by the softish ground. She is in good form at home and with her having worked well at Kempton in the past, it would be no surprise to us if she was to win what looks likely to be a below-average contest before going on to show progression in handicaps.

Moving on to Friday, we have two likely runners in the shape of Catalan Bay and Count Trevisio. Catalan Bay is entered to run in the extended 5f fillies handicap at Bath and we would be hopeful of a bold showing from her. We feel that she has not really handled the all-weather surface in her two starts in Europe to date and the return to the turf will hopefully see her deliver on the promise she has always shown us at home. Count Trevisio (pictured below relaxing in the paddock) holds an entry in the extended 9f handicap at Wolverhampton later the same day and, with him having run well over the course and distance on his penultimate start, it would be no surprise to us if he were to bounce back to form having failed to stay the longer trip on his latest start.
