Normality was restored to Horses First last week with Jeremy returning from his trip to the Keeneland Sales in Kentucky, at which he purchased a yearling colt by E Dubai. Unfortunately for him, he also came back with some sort of illness that has confined him to bed since Saturday. However, the show must go on and with the latter end of this week looking set to be a busy one on the racing front, Jeremy will be taking every legal medication under the sun in an effort to be back fighting fit by then.
Our first runner in the week gone by was one that we had looked forward to for quite a while, the racecourse debut of the Frank Lisewski-owned Winifred Jo (pictured below). The daughter of Bahamian Bounty is very strong-willed and we thought we might be in a spot of bother when the horsebox only got a few hundred yards outside the yard before she began to play up. Having quickly returned home, we decided to load her into the bigger lorry with the hero of the day, our lead pony Sonny Jim, alongside her to keep her relaxed. It worked a treat and she arrived at Kempton without any problems. The race itself went very well, too, with her displaying the determined attitude she has always shown at home to run on promisingly despite being hampered at the start. Like all of ours, she can be expected to improve significantly from her first taste of racecourse action and should provide Frank with plenty of fun in the seasons to come.
We had a slightly frustrating evening two days later at Wolverhampton. We ran both Theta Wave and Yanza in the 6f seller and the latter fared better, running on under Steve Drowne to finish a never-nearer fourth. The daughter of Bahamian Bounty has been given a chance by the handicapper, who has dropped her 4 lb after the run, so we are likely to return her to handicap company on her next start. Later that evening we saddled the Resurrection Partners-owned Ivory Silk in the 5f handicap and she was unlucky not to add to her tally. Steve Drowne settled the four-year-old at the rear of the field early and swung very wide into the straight, finishing strongly and likely to have finished a close second but for being checked inside the final 1f. The run confirms that she retains all of her ability and we hope she will deservedly return to the winner
