Denton Steals The Show

06th October 2009

Denton (pictured below cantering at home) has improved leaps and bounds since arriving at the yard from Australia and the son of Montjeu completed his hat-trick in game style at Wolverhampton last Friday. Reunited with Pat Cosgrave, who won on him back in early August, the six-year-old travelled well through the race in a prominent position, still going strongly when taking up the running over 2f out. However, once in front he seemed to idle and for a few strides it looked like Quick Release could well peg him back, but our charge kept on gamely for a neck success. The handicapper has put him up 5lb for the win and we are hopeful that he can remain competitive off his revised mark.

We almost made it two winners in as many days on Saturday, as the Simon Rowlands-owned One Way Or Another came agonisingly close to landing a lucrative pot on the Group 1 card at Newmarket. Dropping back to 7f having been freshened up, he was ridden by the immensely promising Irish apprentice Gary Carroll. The six-year-old (pictured winning at Haydock below) was held up in mid-division before being angled off the rail to deliver his challenge. Unfortunately he then became unbalanced in the famous dip and once he recovered his action he powered home, failing by just a head to peg back Aldermoor. Carroll was adamant that he would have won in another 50 yards and compensation should not be long in arriving for this game son of Carnegie.

Looking to the week ahead, our next runner will be tomorrow at Kempton in the shape of Yvonne Evelyn (pictured below) in the 12f handicap. The ground went against her at a late stage when she ran on the turf at Lingfield last time and we feel she is much better than that. The return to the all-weather will suit and she should appreciate the longer trip. William Buick is currently jocked up on her, but there is a possibility that Neil Callan will take the ride if he arrives from Nottingham in time.

On Thursday, the Tony Bloom-owned Thaliwarru (pictured below) will have his first start for us in the 7f nursery at Kempton. The son of Barathea has settled into his new surroundings and with him working well of late, we are hopeful of a good showing from him.

On Friday, the Stuart & Kate Dobb-owned Medicean Man is likely to head up north to contest his first race over 7f against older horses at York. The son of Medicean has proven highly-progressive in recent months and while he has exhibited a telling turn of foot over 6f, such is his relaxed nature we are confident he will be able to carry that speed over an additional furlong. Looking at the entries for the race, it looks likely to be a competitive event, but we are hopeful that our charge will acquit himself well. Later that day we are likely to send Acrosstheuniverse (pictured below, right, with Denton) to run in the 5f maiden at Wolverhampton. She has passed a stalls test with flying colours since her last intended start at Warwick back in June ended with her scrambling under the stalls and with the race not looking to be overly strong, she could well make a bold bid.

Plans for the weekend are not so solid at this stage, but we could well send Jung (pictured below) to run in the 6f seller at Wolves and El Diego to run in the 12f handicap at York on Saturday. On Sunday, Simla Sunset could well run in the 7f handicap for three-year-olds at Lingfield.
