Knocking On The Door

17th November 2009

When a yard is on a run like ours is at present, with the horses running extremely well without winning, it is difficult to know whether to be happy or frustrated. From four runners in the last week, we have had two seconds, a third and a fifth, with all four running right up to or very close to their best. Our first port of call was at Kempton on Wednesday with Chief Exec. The seven-year-old (pictured using the Seawalker) is in the most consistent form of his life at present and he ran another solid race to finish fifth, perhaps being delivered a bit too early with his challenge and weakening close home as a result. He will return to his beloved Wolverhampton for his next start in a couple of weeks. Later that evening, the previously inconsistent Yanza produced her fourth in-the-money finish in succession, dead-heating for third in the 6f handicap having looked the likeliest winner 2f out. We feel that dropping her back to 5f is the next step to take with her and we are looking forward to her next run, which is likely to be at Wolverhampton on November 30th.

Last Monday, we sent the Resurrection Partners-owned Ivory Silk and Vamos to Wolverhampton and both ran up to their very best in finishing second in their respective races. Ivory Silk was contesting the valuable 5f handicap and having lost momentum when being checked after 1f, she powered home in trademark style to grab second in the shadow of the winning post. Her next target has not been decided yet, but we are strongly considering stepping her up to 6f for the first time since we claimed her. 90 minutes later, the likeable Vamos lined up for the extended 8f handicap under our apprentice Luke Kilgarriff and both did the yard proud. With the pace again unsuitably slow for Vamos, Luke sensibly eased him into the race before the sprint for home developed, leading briefly in the straight before being out-stayed in the closing stages by Just Jimmy. Both horse and rider (pictured below at home) will have their winning turn in the near future.

Looking to the days ahead, on Friday we are likely to send both the Simon Rowlands-owned [b]King
