Saturday could be an exciting day for the yard as our 2 year old Street Cry colt, Street Power, is all set to make his racing debut at Lingfield. The colt has grown up a lot over the last few months and he will definitely come on for the experience. The main objective is for him to enjoy himself. He was bred by one of our long-term supporters, John Hawkins, who has several horses in training with us and has an excellent eye for breeding and pedigrees. John has always though a lot of the horse and will be cheering him home at the weekend. Street Power (pictured below) runs in what looks a very competitive maiden at 1.20. Incidentally his half sister may make her debut soon next week so stay tuned.
Although it is always nice to wake up to a lovely sunny morning, it was good to see some rain today. Saucy Night has been fit and ready for a race for weeks but just hasn't had the cut in the ground that he needs. He holds an entry in a hurdle race at Ludlow on Thursday and it is currently touch and go as to whether the course receives enough rain. Thankfully we have had a bit at home and that has allowed us to jump the horse out in our schooling field (he is pictured below schooling with jockey Luke Kilgarriff), so he will be well-prepared if the weather decides to do us a favour.
Our new barn that I showed you last week is quickly filling up with quality horses. Moving in last week was 4 year old Danehill gelding, Hassaad, an ex-Maktoum horse. This smart looking animal has won three times and shown plenty of ability. The horse is fairly lightly raced, having not gone to the track as a 2 year old and looks like he will improve further. He has won over a mile and given every indication that he will stay over a longer trip. The plan with him is to give him a well earned rest and then look for some nice handicap races for him next season.
It was nice to welcome Harry Findlay and his long term friend Anthony Fortesque Thomas (both pictured below with Jeremy) to the farm this week. Anthony worked with Godolphin for many years and is renowned for having a fantastic eye for a horse (he's seen a few champions in his time). Both he and Harry watched a parade of the new horses with Jeremy and myself and Anthony shared his thoughts on them with Jeremy regarding their conformation, pedigree and what he thought we could do with them. He was particularly impressed with El Diego who he felt could make a really nice dual purpose horse.
The horses are continuing to go well at home. Watching them work on the gallops this morning, it was great to see many of them nearing race fitness. Perhaps the one that caught my eye the most was Northern Seren, Evelyn Smith's gorgeous 4 year old mare. She has settled nicely into her work this season and is starting to shape up nicely. She has one bumper race left and we are very excited about getting her back to the races. Also going nicely is Maidanni (pictured below working this morning), owned by The Resurrection Partners. The horse only ran 3 times for Godolphin, winning impressively as York under Frankie Dettori, before having leg trouble. Hopefully he has left his soundness problems behind him and is progressing very well with no shoes on at home.
This week's quote comes from trainer Jeremy Gask after moving into his new house on the farm:
"I can't tell you how great it is to now be living on the farm. I feel like myself and my family are now home".
