You may have already read in the press about the latest horse to move to Horses First Racing. Indeed the arrival of Ouninpohja (pictured below right, winning at Newmarket) from Paul Nicholls' yard has interested a lot of people. The horse is incredibly talented, being rated 106 on the flat and 141 over hurdles, however he looks to have fallen out of love with the game recently and we plan to give him a break before bringing him back into work and freshening him up. He will undoubtedly be a challenge but one that we are very much looking forward to.
Eleanor Eloise made her racecourse debut yesterday and we were very happy with her. The filly showed her greenness when she missed the break and was slowly into her stride, however jockey Liam Jones got her running and she finished a credible 6th out of 13, still running on. Liam was impressed with the horse and feels she has races to win. 'Ellie', as she is known at home, is named after owner and breeder John Hawkins' daughter and so John was particularly happy to see his filly go well on her debut. She has returned happy and well and will be out again soon. Unfortunately Street Power (pictured below left with Ellie), due to run at Lingfield last Saturday, suffered a last minute scrape to his hock and so we decided not to run him. He is still in full work and should be making his debut in the next couple of weeks.
The rain that we so desperately needed has finally come in abundance and so Saucy Night is all set to have a run this week. He has several entries and a decision is yet to be made about whether to run him over fences or hurdles. If he runs on Thursday he will go either to Wincanton or Hereford, otherwise he may wait until Sunday and head to Towcester. The horse is really looking and feeling well at home and we are excited about getting a run into him at last. He schooled very nicely this morning in the rain under jockey Luke Kilgarriff and it was great to see him in such good form, obviously loving his job.
Jeremy and his family are settling into their new home on the farm this week. All of the furniture has finally come over from Australia, eldest daughter Darcy is settled in at the local school and wife Kerrie has finally found some “funky wellies” to combat the great British weather with. With the essentials in place, it is good to hear Jeremy say it is really starting to feel like this is where they belong, despite being soaked to the skin (pictured below) this morning!
Eamonn is off sick this week and so it has been left to me to find a quote to leave you with. I know that, to Eamonn, the guy who said the following is a bit of a legend and so this week's quote is:
“Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens”
