Three of our 2 year olds came back from their pre-training yards yesterday to start full work in preparation for their racing campaigns. Hanta Yo (a colt by Alhaarth), our Acclamation filly and another colt by Tobougg were all ridden out this morning and, aside from the odd buck, went very well. They are all lovely-looking horses and we are excited to see how they will develop. We have seven more youngsters due to come back to us over the coming weeks, taking the number of horses we currently have in work close to the 40 mark. Pictured in the photo are Hanta Yo and the Tobougg colt.
I'm used to introducing you to new horses but we have a new human addition to the team this week. Jo Smith joined us as Financial Controller yesterday after spending time teaching Professional Stage Accountancy in Bristol and Cardiff. Jo has three horses of her own and has ridden up to one star level in eventing. It is great to have Jo (pictured below) on board and my wife Oriana is especially pleased to be able to relinquish some of the financial duties to her.
Mutual Respect, the horse that arrived last week, has settled in well to his new routine and is working nicely. He is still aiming for a race at Chepstow on 18th January and is pictured below working this morning under work rider Matt Latus. Jahash, Micky Cole and Saucy Night all schooled this morning and Hold's Nik and Quedillac, two of our young 4 year old National Hunt horses, did some pole work and hopped over some small obstacles as we continue their education. It is great to see the older horses going well along with the babies.
The construction work at the farm is ongoing with a new barn being built and our hill gallops being re-surfaced. The all-weather tracks that have been installed around the premises are now complete and provide the horses with a safe alternative route back to the stables after work. Saucy Night and Mutual Respect are pictured using it on the way out to the flat gallop earlier today.
Today is a sad day for both English and Australian racing with the passing of the great George Moore, aged 83. George (pictured below after winning the 1,000 Guineas on Fleet in 1967, rode 2,278 winners worldwide, including 119 Group 1s, during a riding career that lasted between 1937-71. His many victories included the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe, the 2,000 Guineas, 1,000 Guineas, the Derby and the Coronation Stakes. Known as Cotton Fingers for his amazing skill in the saddle, George's name will always be linked in racing circles with the legendary horse 'Tulloch' on whom he won 19 races.
This week's quote is from Neville Begg, a leading Australian trainer:
“George Moore was a great horseman, who had a touch of genius about him”.
