Both of our runners this week ran well and came home safely. Desert Quest ran a terrific race to come 2nd at Huntingdon in a red hot novice chase, beaten only by the first-class Modicum who is now bound for The Arkle at Cheltenham. The two finished 20 lengths ahead of the rest of the field, all of who have been rated upwards of 129 over hurdles. Desert Quest jumped superbly and we were delighted with his run. The horse returned home sound and well and was in good form on the gallops this morning. He may head to Kempton this Saturday to run in a novice handicap chase. The other runner last week was Derry City (pictured) who made his debut over hurdles under Richard Johnson at Plumpton yesterday. The horse jumped very well on ground that rode a lot softer than the official 'good' rating and finished 5th. He will come on both physically and mentally for the experience.
Chief Exec is our most likely runner this week and he is all set for a run at Wolverhampton on Friday. He is entered in the 16.00 handicap over seven furlongs and we hope for a good run from him. Also holding a Wolverhampton entry is Eleanor Eloise (pictured on the right running 2nd at Lingfield in January) who is due to run over 6 furlongs there either on Saturday night or next Thursday. The filly is in good form at home and normally gives her all on the track. We expect a big run from her.
We had a phone call this week from the Never Say Die Club, based at The National Stud in Newmarket. The club were enquiring about a colt that one of our owners, Richard Page, has just purchased, as they are keen to follow his progress. The colt is by High Chaparral, out of Blushing Queen. High Chaparral won the 2002 Derby and is also a dual Breeders' Cup Turf winner. Blushing Queen has already produced winning offspring when her second foal, Wavertree Princess, won her maiden at Lingfield last year, breaking the 2yo course record in the process. The mare is herself by Desert King, who sired the legendary Makybe Diva. Richard's colt (pictured below with his dam) is currently at a pre-training yard being backed but we are looking forward to him coming here to start full training. It is nice to have a horse with an established fan base before he even gets to the course!
Yankeedoodledandy (pictured below with groom Rosie Carruthers) came under saddle this week after spending time building up his strength on the Seawalker. He is an exciting prospect to work with and we are all looking forward to seeing him back on the track this year, not least his dedicated owner Ken Tyre. With more and more horses coming into work every week we are continually looking for more skilled work riders. There is a description of the job in our careers section. For more information or to apply for a work rider position please contact Kelly Baker on 01985 841166 or email kelly@horsesfirstracing.com.
This weeks quote comes from my wife Oriana's sister Melinda Brown who we recently spent some wonderful time with in Jamaica. As someone at bit predisposed to "action" and who has suffered from ME (Chronic Fatigue) over the years it is well received.
