Following on from Chief Exec's effortless win two weeks ago (see photo below) we have had another good week of positive runs. The Chief headed back to Wolverhampton last Friday night to see if he could provide back to back wins. Although he wasn't first past the post this time he did run a decent fourth under his 7llb penalty, coming from off the pace and showing his turn of foot in the home straight. Although the handicapper has gone after him following his impressive victory, he remains a horse that we can have some fun with and he may well run on turf in the summer. Our other Wolverhampton runner last week was John Hawkins' mare, Eleanor Eloise. She started as the rank outsider of a competitive looking field and ran a credible fifth. It was only Ellie's fifth run and she is still learning about the game. The same can be said for Northern Seren (pictured below) who ran for us at Wincanton last Thursday. Her Maiden hurdle turned out to be very competitive and they went a good gallop on the decent ground. It was her 2nd start over hurdles and her jumping proved once again to be very good. She settled better this time out and needs just one more run to get her handicap mark. Wincanton is a lovely course and we are lucky that it is just down the road from us, although it seems that there is no such thing as a bad race there. The winner of Northern Seren's race was entered in the Triumph hurdle and the runner up is rated 112. Micky Cole also ran well in the handicap hurdle at Wincanton on the same day and will now turn his hooves to chasing where he can utilise his jumping skills. Making full-use of his jumping skills on Friday was Saucy Night who ran well and jumped nicely to come 4th in a handicap chase at Leicester. The jockeys reported the ground to be riding on the firm side which wouldn't suit our old boy but he returned home safely and didn't appear to be any the worse for his run.
Two more horses have arrived at the yard this week. Danetime Lord is a useful flat horse, currently rated 82 on the all-weather. He won easily at Wolverhampton on his last start, providing his sixth victory. The horse has settled in well and we would look to run him fairly soon. A nice-looking filly by Proud Citizen is this week's other new arrival. Jeremy spotted her at the Goffs Kempton Breeze-up sales and was impressed with her laid-back attitude to her work and was also taken with her movement. The filly (pictured below) has only just turned two and, as her sire continues to impress with his offspring, is an exciting prospect for the future.
More new horses as usual means more riders required and we are constantly looking out for talented Work Riders to come and work for us. We are looking to employ people with extensive experience within the racing industry, who are hard-working, dedicated and wanting to become an important part of a successful team. We are also looking for a Head Person with the same credentials. The work riders will ride for the majority of the morning on our fantastic new gallops (see photo), sitting on horses like Desert Quest, Remember Ramon and some top-class two year olds. We have good accommodation on site and are offering very competitive salaries for both the work riders and the Head Person. You can apply for the jobs in our careers section, or by calling or emailing Kelly Baker on 01985 841166/ kelly@horsesfirstracing.com.
Cheonmado is our only possible runner this week and he holds an entry at Kempton on Friday for the handicap over a mile. The horse (pictured on the gallops) is looking well and will run with a tongue-tie for the first time so it will be interesting to see how he goes. Next week we have multiple runners. Check the news next Tuesday for details on them.
Enjoy Cheltenham!
