Jeremy Gask - Biography

All of the horses at Horses First Racing are trained by Jeremy Gask. Jeremy, 34, recently joined us from Australia, where he was one of the leading trainers. He was in the top 5 trainers every year for the last 5 years in South Australia, winning races at all levels. In his final season there he won 50 races with 30 horses and his training methods have always been very much in line with the Horses First philosophy.

Jeremy took out his trainer’s license with the South Australian Jockey Club in 1997, starting with just one horse. Since then he has trained well over 200 winners. In his last five seasons in Australia his horses won over 15 ‘Black Type’ races and in one of them, the Listed Port Adelaide Cup, his 3 entries came 1st, 3rd and 4th. In the ‘05-’06 season he achieved just short of one million Australian dollars in prize money (£400,000+) and one of his most impressive winners was Tingirana, who won the Lavazza Long Black ($100K) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle. Jeremy also enjoyed several trebles, including one at the Oakbank Easter Carnival where he had 3 wins from 3 runners, one of them being in the main Listed Sprint race. The first double for the stable turned into the first treble at Murray Bridge in the 03-04 season.

His last full Australian season saw Jeremy’s stable finish 4th in the Metropolitan Premiership, just a few wins from second place. Working with a relatively small string he achieved the 3rd highest win strike rate and the 2nd highest place strike rate (over 25%) for trainers with more than 60 runners. At one stage he had 5 of the top 10 rated fillies and mares in South Australia (Fly For Me, Tingirana, Jug Full, Maybe McLaren and Sunturwasi).

Many of Jeremy’s horses have set track records. El Diablo set the Victoria Park 3yo track record for 5f, Tingirana still holds the track record for 9f at the premier track in South Australia and Mt Billy holds the Gawler 6f track record. Although Australian racing focuses more on the flat, Jeremy was also successful with hurdlers, breaking a long standing hurdle record at Murray Bridge with Lead A Club on his first jumps start in the 2004 season.
