  • we hope to see some improvement with him. FINE FINALE is our final runner of the day
  • we have an early start at Lingfield this morning with YOU GOT THE LOVE. She will be assisted by blinkers for the first time today as her attitude towards racing has not yet impressed. We hope she will show a little improvement on her fourth racecourse appearance. TOGA TIGER makes his debut for the yard at Lingfield after time off with an injury. I am still learning a bit about the horse and will be happy if he returns sound and well in the morning
  • she pulled up a little scratchy after the race and I will have a discussion with the owners with regard to her future.
  • she is well and home and we are hopeful that she will run well for her syndicate. However
  • as I would hope he can race through the winter. GONE TO GROUND goes to Wolverhampton and has also been fitted with blinkers
  • although I think he will be better at 3 I hope to see more than what he has showed us on the track so far. Last night BARBIERI failed to deliver what I know she can

Lamenting Leicester........ - 30th July 2009

What a disappointing evening at Leicester last night with the last race being called off due to the lack of a second doctor on course while the horses were in the paddock ready to go.

I am pleased to see that Jack Mitchell is ok after his fall in the previous race. I gather this was the reason the Doctor was called away and they were unable to run the race.

I don't fully understand the rules and regulations regarding this matter and of course my first priority would be to any injured person. It is very frustrating though that this sort of thing can occur with no contingency plan in place. Perhaps there is but i haven't read anywhere what that is.

The owners of FLYING SILKS, Trevor and Carol Coffen had gone to Leicester, an eight hour round trip, as new racehorse owners. It is the first meeting they have been to as an owner. To have the excitement built up ten minutes before the race only to have the rug pulled must have been deflating.

I must make the point that i am by no means suggesting they run without a Doctor or put riders in any danger, my sister in law lost a leg in a race fall, however it was hardly a good first experience for the Coffen's let alone the expense of sending two staff and a horse for a day out. That's done and dusted now and it onwards we must now focus.

MEDICEAN MAN and TAKIZADA run at Haydock tomorrow night and i expect both to run well. The ground will be a slight query for MEDICEAN MAN as i would not be too keen to tackle heavy ground. He is going well and has a lovely economical action and think it is best served on ground he can get good purchase on.

TAKIZADA went ok at her first run for us and will improve for the run and the step up in trip.

Coops my assistant is on holiday this week and i have decided he won't be allowed to take anymore. It's at times like these I realise how well organised and valuable he is in the yard.

It hasn't been such a bad week as getting out of bed earlier has been made easier by the fact that the sheep have just been weaned and boy have they been making a noise. I have given Greg, a very good rider and resident musician, the job of dealing with them and whatever he has done they are happier the last few days. It's always handy having a Kiwi around during these times.

Glorious Goodwood is in full swing and a couple of stand out performances so far with Rip Van Winkle a star for mine. I would love to see a re-match with Sea The Stars though i don't think it will happen.
