Cricket........what cricket? - 27th August 2009

I've noticed lately the English take their cricket very seriously. The Aussies don't actually consider The Ashes very important anyway.....

On more important subject matter it has been a quiet week for the yard and i took the opportunity to head up to Doncaster for the yearling sales. It's a good chance to get the eye in for the sales season and we brought home a lovely full brother to SUTTON VENY. A very well balanced individual it was never my intention to seek out a relation but he was such a nice horse and i rate his sister quite highly. Anyone who might be interested in a piece of the horse should contact me as i think he will be popular. Sutton Veny may have looked slightly disappointing the other day at Sandown however i don't want to make excuses but it would be best to overlook the run as she was heavily in season. This can have different effects on different horses and it is a matter of running under the circumstance and seeing how they perform.

As a relative newcomer to the UK racing scene the sales offer a great opportunity to meet people in the industry. Travelling with our agent Dermot Farrington, the trip got off to a shaky start with Imogen booking a large double room for us. On opening the room, an ashen faced Dermot informed me there was actually only one bed in the room and after giving him a wink i dashed back down to the reception to sort out the matter.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable meal on the Tuesday night with an all Irish gathering. One of the interesting members of the party was Dermot Cantelon. A stud owner himself, Dermot is a business partner of Sir Michael Smurfett and was involved in the Melbourne Cup successes of VINTAGE CROP and MEDIA PUZZLE. It was interesting to get his slant on the experience and along with some very funny stories during the night. I have come to realize a night out with the Irish is never short of a good laugh and they never let the truth get in the way of a good yarn.

For those who haven't been to the sales it is a great experience. It is difficult not to get caught up in the excitement and i could recommend a visit to anyone new to the game or someone wanting to get involved. I would be happy to have you along if you would like to get a taste of it.

Tomorrow i will try something a little different with CATALAN BAY, if she lets us that is! I am not sure she is quite letting down fully and thus have decided to try and ride her back in a sharper contest with headgear on. The gear has been advised by the jockeys who have ridden her with the only concern being her keenness early in the event. Thus we have dropped her trip and put her in a stronger affair to try and aid this.

Finally, fair play England in the cricket. You played the best cricket when it mattered. (Ouch!)

I enjoyed the series immensely and have been surprised how little stick i have had about it since. Safe to say i would have given plenty had Australia won. Maybe we aren't such graceful winners!
