  • we hope to see some improvement with him. FINE FINALE is our final runner of the day
  • we have an early start at Lingfield this morning with YOU GOT THE LOVE. She will be assisted by blinkers for the first time today as her attitude towards racing has not yet impressed. We hope she will show a little improvement on her fourth racecourse appearance. TOGA TIGER makes his debut for the yard at Lingfield after time off with an injury. I am still learning a bit about the horse and will be happy if he returns sound and well in the morning
  • she pulled up a little scratchy after the race and I will have a discussion with the owners with regard to her future.
  • she is well and home and we are hopeful that she will run well for her syndicate. However
  • as I would hope he can race through the winter. GONE TO GROUND goes to Wolverhampton and has also been fitted with blinkers
  • although I think he will be better at 3 I hope to see more than what he has showed us on the track so far. Last night BARBIERI failed to deliver what I know she can

It's Not Snow! - 20th January 2010

Woke up last night in a cold sweat as i thought i could hear snow tapping on the window. I realised how ridiculous that was but it took me an hour or so to go back to sleep such is the dread of snow at the moment. Anyway it looks ok this morning, wet, but no snow.

KING'S MIRACLE tries to save her spot in the team today and she will have to do something special to keep it. She has been disappointing and as i have mentioned previously she is her own worst enemy.

It is interesting looking at certain Sires and the traits they tend to throw into their progeny. The most important thing for a sire is to get runners to the track and be able to train them. Take Danehill, a sire who was a champion in both hemispheres. His progeny may have had the odd conformational fault, but they were so well boned and could overcome these faults. Their temperaments are so good overall they could take racing and handled training so well thus he managed to get a huge percentage of his horses to the track, trained well and prepared to make an impact. King's Best can get a good one, there is no question, but it is no secret they can be difficult and this must have a huge effect on his overall statistics. His progeny can be tough on themselves and prove awkward. It is possible he can throw horses with equal ability to some of the better sires, however he will never get the high percentage to the races that other sires may get, hence his record will reflect this.

Montjeu might be the same despite the fact he remains a leading sire here in Europe. The breed weren't quite as successful in the Southern Hemisphere, partly i think due to the hotter more testing conditions as his progeny can also get a touch hot. It isn't a criticism at all, just a thought on why some sires progeny may or may not suit different environments.

What great news to hear ZENYATTA will return to the track again. The connections obviously read my previous blog on the subject of horses retiring early. This news is great for racing and it keeps alive the mouth watering prospect of a clash between ZENYATTA and RACHEL ALEXANDRA. I don't know how likely that is but it will prove a lucrative marketing too for US racing.
